Quick Write
My writer’s group met last night. It was my turn to lead and I began with a 10 minute Quick Write. That’s when you choose a writing prompt, set a timer, and write about it. Don’t worry about grammar, just let loose the creative right side of your brain. This was my try:
A Warm Memory
While his older brothers spent the day at school, little Matthew visited my barn to pet my horses. He busied himself gathering fistfuls of grass as sweet treats for Apache, tied to the post. While the horse nibbled on bits of dropped grass, Matthew stroked his cheek.
He asked if he could lead the horse around the pasture. Should a five-year-old lead an energetic Arabian? I searched for a bucket and turned to answer him, but Matthew had already untied the rope and started his walk. Apache followed behind him and nuzzled his neck.
For the first time since his daddy died of cancer, Matthew smiled.
Your Turn
Quick Writes are a great exercise to stimulate original thoughts. Choose a prompt like one of these:
Write about a souvenir you have bought or received.
Write about a memory that makes you feel warm.
Ready?
Set?
Write!
p.s. You can read my tribute to Apache & Vertigo, which has received the most comments of all my blog entries because of the far-reaching impact those horses had on my community. The title is White Beauty. For the link, click here.
