Happy Surprises

A young woman in her rookie year as a firefighter asked me for advice on the best way to get rehired. My reply to her was to work hard at whatever job she’s asked to do, even if it’s cold-trailing through wet ashes or rolling hose.

Since March is Women’s History Month, it’s interesting the number of older women in the film industry who were nominated for Oscar Awards. Viola Davis, Jamie Lee Curtis and Diane Warren were asked the same question:

“What’s your advice to young women entering the industry?”

Viola Davis, 57, known for her lead role in The Help (2011), Woman King (2022) and at least 53 other movies replied, “Work Hard. Believe in yourself.”

Jamie Lee Curtis, 64, is known for her lead roles in True Lies (1994), Everything Everywhere All At Once (2022), and 50 other movies. Her reply to the question was, “Work Hard. Don’t give up.” Her surprised face when she wins is epic!

Diane Warren, 66, has written over 80 songs charted in the Top 10. Nine of those were rated #1. She’s been nominated for an Oscar 14 times. Her most loved songs include “If I Could Turn Back Time” (Cher 1989),  “Because You Loved Me” (Celine Dion 1996) and, her most recent, “Applause” (Sofia Carson, 2023). Her reply to the question was, “If you have a dream, work really hard for it…” Both Warren and Curtis won Oscars in 2023 for their work.

It doesn’t matter what industry we work in, working hard with diligence and determination will result in success. Hard work over a span of decades offers a personally rewarding sense of accomplishment even if we are not recognized or nominated for an award. Loved ones around us will be blessed by our enduring work.

Have you ever received an award that surprised you?
