Delights
My husband and I always try for leaner meals through the month of January. It’s a good way to balance the excesses of December. This year it was easy to cut sweets for a time since we felt the lingering loss of appetite from the Covid virus. It also helped that we couldn’t smell. Our taste ability was limited to super sweet or super salty. For all we knew, a slice of banana cream pie might really be spray-painted rubber cement. While sick, we’d take turns each day sticking our noses into a jar of Vick’s Vaporub.
“Can you smell it yet?”
“No. Can you?”
“Maybe a tiny bit… No.”
Once recovered and thankful to be well and back to smelling and tasting things, we celebrated with a masked trip to the grocery store. Feeling deprived for almost a month, Hubby thought we’d splurge with dessert: our choice of sweet breakfast cereal. He grabbed a box of Special K “Chocolatey Delight" and threw it into our cart, pleased with his compromise.
That night, after dinner when the sugar craving came, he practically skipped to the cereal cupboard for his bowl of healthy dessert. I watched as he took his first bite. His brow furrowed as he chewed, staring at the bowl’s contents as if in deep thought.
“Not quite the delight you imagined?” I asked.
He set his bowl down and rummaged through more cupboards until he found the dark chocolate Oreo cookies. Pinching a handful, he crumbled them over his cereal and took another bite.
“That’s what I’m talkin’ about!” he smiled.
“Yes, now those pesky pounds will drop right off.” I said while pouring my second bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios.
